The Group SCHOOL:
Archive and Resource Center

The idea for this website project arose in Zoom conversations among The Group School (TGS) alumni wanting to preserve the school’s legacy and illuminate its relevance to new generations engaged in reimagining and reinventing the ways we do schooling. The past 25 years have seen a flowering of such efforts — including networks of alternative schools, homeschooling co-ops, and school reinvention labs.

When we look across these efforts, we see many connections to TGS:

Listening to students, taking their ideas and aspirations seriously, and creating learning journeys that make sense to them and their families. ←

Exploring identity in all its social, cultural and racial dimensions. ←

Artistic processes and practices as a way to help students express themselves and construct future visions for themselves and their communities. ←

Encouraging youth activism based on the profound understanding that things do not have to be the way they are and it’s possible to do things differently. ←

It’s our hope that education activists and innovators will make use of the materials in the Archive and Resource Center to further such efforts.

The TGS website is overseen by a group of student and faculty founding members. Many are still active in
Cambridge or nearby communities, and in the Harvard and MIT communities.
